What to Know About Finishes

#BLOGTITLE#

When it comes to giving your room a new splash of color and new life there are many things to consider when it comes to choosing the right options for your next paint job. While we take great pride in working with clients to ensure that the color is just right and the job is done well, there are plenty of things that you can consider and ponder before we even step foot into your room. Today, we look at finishes, what you need to know and what to look forward to before your painting project begins!

What Finish Do I Need?

When it comes to choosing a finish for your room, it is best to choose a finish that is appropriate for the room and application. Generally, we prefer semi-gloss for trim, eggshell white for kitchens and bathrooms, and flat for all other rooms. While it’s true that glossy finishes are the most durable of finishes, flat finishes help to hide imperfections that occur in walls and surfaces. When it comes to floors and surfaces that have heavy foot traffic in your home, porch paint is the most durable option.

Oil versus Latex

Another sometimes confusing question that comes up is what is better, oil or latex? Latex is a water-based paint. It dries quickly, there are less fumes, and it cleans up with water. Latex can still be chosen if you are painting over oil paint, but it must be primed first with an oil-based primer.
If paint fumes are an issue for you we recommend going with a low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint. Many brands offer a low or no VOC option.

Choosing the right finish is often just as important as choosing the right color for your painting project. Think about your surface, how much wear and tear it will get, and what kind of room it is before moving forward with your finish. If you need more guidance, contact us, we'd love to help out!
